What Is a Chuppah? A Guide for Denver Couples

If you've been researching ceremony structures and keep seeing the word "chuppah," you're not alone in wondering what exactly it is — and whether it's right for your wedding. The short answer: a chuppah is a four-post canopy structure, rooted in Jewish tradition, but beloved far beyond it for the intimate, sheltered feeling it creates. Here's everything you need to know.

The Basics: What Is a Chuppah?

A chuppah (pronounced "KHU-pah," rhymes with "puffah") is a canopy supported by four poles, traditionally used as the ceremonial space under which a Jewish couple is married. The word comes from Hebrew, meaning "covering" or "canopy." At its most essential, it's a sheltered space — a symbolic home — that the couple stands beneath during their vows.

The four posts represent the walls of a home. The open sides represent that the couple's home will be open to family, friends, and community. The canopy above symbolizes the new household they're creating together. In Jewish tradition, the chuppah is one of the most meaningful and symbolic elements of the wedding ceremony.

Who Uses a Chuppah?

Chuppahs are central to Jewish wedding ceremonies — Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and interfaith alike. But over the past decade, they've become increasingly popular with non-Jewish couples as well, simply because the aesthetic is so distinctly beautiful: a four-posted structure with a draped canopy creates an intimate, enclosed feeling that a single arch simply can't replicate.

If you're drawn to the idea of a space that feels like a room within a room — a defined, sheltered place in the middle of an open garden or venue — a chuppah might be exactly what you're looking for, regardless of your religious or cultural background.

What Does a Chuppah Look Like?

Traditional chuppahs typically feature a simple frame — four wooden poles supporting a fabric canopy. Over time, the style has evolved significantly. Today you'll find chuppahs in a range of materials and finishes, from raw natural birch to painted white wood to metal frames.

Our chuppahs at Bower & Birch come in birch, cedar, and copper-finished frames, each with an ivory linen drape across the top. The corner posts are accented with small greenery ties. The result is warm, natural, and elegant — the kind of structure that photographs beautifully against both Colorado's dramatic outdoor landscapes and more intimate indoor settings.

We offer three chuppahs — The Birch Chuppah, The Traditional Chuppah, and The Modern Chuppah — in birch, cedar, and copper-finished frames, giving couples the flexibility to reserve the one that fits their style and is available on their date.

How to Decorate a Chuppah

One of the great joys of a chuppah is how versatile it is as a backdrop for florals and decoration. A few approaches we see most often:

Lush florals on the corner posts

Large, overflowing arrangements at each corner post create a garden-like, immersive effect. Seasonal blooms, garden roses, and trailing greenery all work beautifully. This is the most traditional approach and looks stunning in photos taken from outside the canopy looking in.

Hanging installations from the canopy

Suspended florals, dried pampas, or fabric draping hanging from the canopy frame creates a dramatic overhead element that frames the couple beautifully. This works especially well for tall chuppahs where there's clearance for hanging arrangements.

Greenery wrapping the posts

Eucalyptus, ivy, or fern wrapped around the posts with simple twine gives a lush, garden-ceremony feel without the cost of a full floral installation. This is a popular option for couples working with a tighter floral budget who still want the chuppah to feel dressed.

Minimal — the frame speaks for itself

Our ivory linen drape is beautiful on its own. Small greenery accents at the corners and nothing else can be just as striking as a full installation, especially at outdoor venues where the natural backdrop does the visual work.

Renting a Chuppah in Denver, Colorado

If you're planning a ceremony in Denver or anywhere along the Front Range, renting a chuppah is a much more practical option than buying one. A quality chuppah is large, requires specific transport, and needs assembly — which is exactly why rental makes sense for a one-time event.

At Bower & Birch, we offer chuppah rentals with a 7-day pickup window so you have plenty of flexibility around your event schedule. Pick up from our central Denver location, follow the included setup guide, and have it assembled in under 15 minutes — easy assembly, no special skills needed. If you'd rather have us handle delivery, that's available as an add-on.

Our chuppahs are priced at $150, which includes the full rental window, the frame, the ivory linen drape, and greenery accent ties. Check availability and reserve yours here.
